![]() ![]() I can't remember any particular BGM, tho, so it must have been very fitting, haha. They weren't annoying and even had some atmosphere, so props for that. OP/ED were above average tunes, but nothing too extraordinary. Not all of them are perfect for their roles, Isako's voice is just that tiny bit too adult-sounding, but the acting itself is very good. I'd say that the actors have done an amazing work, too, portraying practically children very faithfully. Dennou Coil uses audio hints in the show in an effective manner, characters are often guided by sounds, and this is portrayed very well. Just like with the Art section, it's a fine work done here, in the sound department. I'd say that the conceptual purity and fine execution deserves a 9. One might wish for some better looking designs or more intricate portrayal of cyber reality, at the same time the one we got serves the purpose of the show perfectly. The other side of the coin - the cyber world - shares the simple and pure designs, but swaps the colour palette and portrays an often confused virtual world, glitchy, unfinished or no longer true to the world not so virtual. There is no moe, no lolis, these are children, this is their fat cyberdog, and that creature is their granny, god spare me from her visage. There are no extravagant designs, some of what is there might even be seen as sorta, well, ugly, but even these ugly bits or, rather, especially the ugly bits reveal the purity of this show. At the same time, it's very well-made with good animation and excellent atmosphere, even if this atmosphere is the seemingly trivial world of elementary school. 'This is my battleship, this is my reconnaissance ship, this is my sneaky ship, this is my fast ship.' In XCOM, you get attached to these soldiers as they perform mission after mission. Says Meier, "We want people to get invested in these individual ships so that you recognize them from one encounter to the next. And while those units may be spaceships rather than human soldiers, you still establish a relationship with your vessels by choosing which type to purchase, and how to customize them as you earn currency over time. You move units into position and then attack opposing units or use special abilities to gain the advantage, and there's even a sort-of cover system in which asteroids function as natural barriers by interfering with your line of sight. I can see elements of XCOM in it, for instance, mostly within the turn-based space battles that play such a central role. What Meier and Firaxis are making brims with potential. For me, the fun part is the design and watching it grow and iterating, and this approach gives us the ability to kind of focus most of our time and energy on that part of what we're making." "We can do games on a shorter schedule," he continues, "but there's still the same amount of actual game design, the same amount of time spent iterating and evolving the game as with other games. So what I wanted to get back to was a method of making games that really focused on game design, that allowed us to spend most of our time designing and maybe a little less of our time on all the other stuff needed to make games." These days, we might spend two or three years on a game, but there's only the same amount of actual game design time. He clearly loves the act of creation, so it doesn't surprise me that Meier and the other members of his team at Firaxis have aimed their focus at smaller games that prioritize systems over a big-budget presentation. It wasn't my first time talking with him during a trip to Baltimore a couple of years back, Meier had told me about weekends spent creating gameplay prototypes during the development of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. I got a chance to discover just what some of those challenges are just recently, during a chat with Meier himself. Just because you aren't controlling dozens of units across a planet-spanning map doesn't mean that a game doesn't present unique issues during development, however. In this case, you control a single fleet made up of many spacecraft, and maneuver that fleet about the galaxy, performing missions, spreading influence, and customizing ships for maximum battle effectiveness. It is not a grand strategy epic in the vein of Civilization instead, Starships' closest relative within the Sid Meier pantheon is probably Ace Patrol. The key element for him is the shape of the board, particularly the rolled bottoms, and not the size what makes them stand out. In the last decades Thomas is confident and happy about how his longboards perform when it comes to logging, stall-turns trim and good old-fashioned nose riding. In Bexon's words, if he won the lottery, he would still be doing what he does but instead of working 60 hours a week, he would work for 30 hours so he would be able to spend more time with his family: “It definitely puts a strain in your personal relationships because you have to spend so much time at work.” When you love your work so much drawing a separation between work from the enjoyment side of it, it’s a challenge. That is how his shaping career took off at his mom’s garage to what it is today. This kid had drive and passion, and when something feels that strong since being a youngster, it is pretty difficult to deny it. In his own words: "It’s more fun making surfboards than dealing with problems”. There was no doubt when it came to working on social working, the cafe or shaping boards: Thomas established himself as a full-time shaper. At the end, skipping work was the result when trying to shape the boards for friends and keen followers. While he was studying for Social Work and working as a chef in a local Maroochydore Café, he would be still making his own boards.
